The concept of Global Jewry is one with which I am personally and professionally aligned, as it resonates with the values and beliefs that have shaped my life and career.

International and intercultural relations have always been a cornerstone of my identity. Born in the multicultural tapestry of the former Soviet Union—modern-day Uzbekistan—I grew up amidst a rich diversity of nationalities, and some of the relationships formed during that time remain meaningful connections to this day. Later, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to grow up in Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people, where the vibrant coexistence of ethnicities in a democratic society further enriched my perspective. More recently, life brought me to Germany, where I had the opportunity to encounter yet another cultural dimension.

Along the way, I learned to speak five languages, which has helped me communicate and connect with people around the world. My journey across these diverse landscapes, combined with a passion for global travel and exploration, has granted me the invaluable experience of living and working in multicultural environments. I have gained profound insights into Jewish traditions, cuisines, and lifestyles from various origins, as well as an appreciation for the richness of other faiths and cultures.

A significant moment in my journey was uncovering more about my roots through a DNA test. This discovery deepened my appreciation for my diverse background, which connects me deeper to both a global community and the rich mosaic of global Jewry.

Connecting with people—and building networks—is at the heart of who I am. I find immense fulfillment in meeting others, learning from their stories, and understanding their unique perspectives. This passion has also shaped my professional path. During my time working in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I was particularly interested in the aspects of cooperation between different countries, world communities, and the development of global allies. Before that, in my work in the Israeli Parliament, I found the various international visitors we had in Jerusalem from all over the world to be a source of great personal interest. It was a pleasure to learn each time that we have strong allies and friends who believe in a bright and promising future for humanity.

Today, my work in interfaith dialogue with meet2respect in Germany — an organisation recently named by Der Spiegel Magazine as one of “100 People Who Give Hope” — allows me to be part of the team to promote mutual respect and tolerance towards Judaism and Islam, and to showcase the many things those religions have in common.

Additionally, through my public diplomacy activity as part of the WJC’s Jewish Diplomatic Corps, I strive to advocate for the Jewish people, and their contemporary needs and strengthen ties with representatives from different countries, highlighting the richness and diversity of Jewish culture and tradition.

Joining the Global Jewry Advisory Board is a natural extension of this lifelong journey. By fostering non-judgmental dialogue, listening to others, being open to different ways of thinking and working together, we can achieve much more. After the atrocities of October 7, 2023, and the alarming surge in open antisemitism masquerading as “anti-Zionism,” it is vital that we stand together. Jewish communities worldwide, alongside their allies, have a responsibility to unite against hatred and ignorance. We must build a future rooted in mutual understanding and shared respect, where dignity and freedom are safeguarded for all.

I am honored to contribute to this mission and to help create a more inclusive, resilient world for generations to come.

Shabbat Shalom and may we see a peaceful and cooperative ceasefire that brings home all of the remaining hostages,

Lena Bakman
