TL;DR: This week connects three deeply significant days in the Jewish calendar – Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Yom HaZikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day), and Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli Independence Day). Together, they represent a powerful journey from mourning to resilience to pride. In a time of rising antisemitism and global uncertainty, these days serve as a reminder of Jewish unity, shared history, and the enduring responsibility to stand together.

This time of year, the Jewish calendar marks three powerful observances that reflect the soul of a people—its pain, its resilience, and its enduring hope. From Yom HaShoah to Yom HaZikaron to Yom HaAtzmaut, Jews around the world stand united in memory, mourning, and celebration—threads that together form the fabric of Jewish solidarity, especially critical in a time of growing unrest and antisemitism.

Yesterday was Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was a day of solemn reflection, honoring the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. In synagogues, schools, and public ceremonies, candles were lit, and names were read aloud. The day is a collective cry against forgetting and a declaration that Jewish lives and stories matter. This year, the urgency of remembrance feels especially intense, as denials of history and threats to Jewish safety resurface in disturbing new forms.

Next week Yom HaZikaron—Israel’s Memorial Day—calls upon us to remember the heroes who gave their lives in defense of the State of Israel and the victims of terror. It is a day of national mourning, marked by sirens and stillness. For Jews worldwide, it is a reminder of the price of sovereignty and the burden of defense that Israel continues to bear. In today’s volatile climate, it is also a call for Jews everywhere to recognize the shared responsibility of supporting and protecting one another.

And then comes Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day — a day of celebration, music, flags, and gratitude. From the ashes of the Holocaust and the sacrifices of Israel’s defenders emerged a vibrant, democratic Jewish state. This transition from mourning to joy is not accidental—it reflects the Jewish spirit: to grieve deeply, and then to choose life.

Together, these three days trace a journey—from unspeakable loss, to sacred remembrance, to national pride. The theme running through them is the same one that gave rise to Global Jewry: the belief that the Jewish people, wherever they live, are bound together by history, responsibility, and a shared future. In a time when Jewish communities are feeling isolated, threatened, or divided, this week offers a profound opportunity to reaffirm our unity. Across continents and ideologies, we share a story, a homeland, and a future. And in remembering, mourning, and celebrating together, we strengthen not only our identity but our collective resolve to stand by each other, no matter what.

Shabbat shalom and may this be the week the hostages return home.
