Yesterday was the June solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere and the shortest in the southern half of the world. Within the Arctic Circle, there was 24 hours of continuous sunlight, while the Antarctic Circle experienced uninterrupted darkness. The stark difference happens only one other time a year, during the December solstice when everything is reversed.

As I was reflecting on this phenomenon, I discovered an unexpected parallel to Global Jewry. It struck me how we often emphasize the brief instances of difference rather than the longer periods of similarity. Why do we tend to focus more on distinctions than on commonalities?

Psychology teaches us that people gravitate towards dichotomous thinking as it simplifies complex information and provides cognitive and emotional clarity. However, embracing nuance and flexibility in thinking can foster deeper connections and stronger relationships.

This understanding is pivotal as we move forward with the implementation phase of Global Jewry. It’s time for action beyond words to cultivate collaboration and strengthen Jewish unity. With your help and input, we will host webinars, establish international communities of practice, enhance our website’s functionality, expand our social media presence, share resources, and explore various avenues to amplify our partners’ messages.

Our focus will be on highlighting our partners, advisors and the many bonds we already share within the Jewish community. Simultaneously, we are committed to diversifying and enlarging our collective, ensuring a broad representation of voices that uphold our message of Jewish connection and togetherness.

Your support over this past year has been invaluable. We look forward to collaborating closely with you in the coming weeks and months as we work towards our mission. Together, let’s shine a spotlight on our moments of alignment rather than our differences.

Shabbat Shalom and may this be the week the hostages return home,

Sandy Cardin
