One of my cherished childhood bedtime stories is “The Little Engine That Could,” a classic tale first published in the U.S. in 1930. The story revolves around a small, determined train that manages to pull a heavy load up a steep hill despite being smaller and less powerful than other engines.

In the narrative, a large, powerful train transporting toys and food for children breaks down and cannot continue. After several larger trains refuse to help, deeming the task too insignificant or too difficult, a little blue engine steps up. As it pulls the heavy load up the hill, the engine repeatedly says, “I think I can, I think I can.” Through sheer determination and optimism, the blue train reaches the top, delivers the goods, and explains its success with a simple, “I thought I could.”

This timeless story is a powerful reminder of the impact of positive thinking and self-belief. It teaches children that even those who are small or underestimated can achieve great things through hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude.

Inspired by this tale, we at Global Jewry approach our mission with the same spirit. Our quest for Jewish unity is an ambitious one, and building bridges among Jewish communities and organizations worldwide is no small feat. We face numerous challenges, both from internal differences and external pressures. There are many reasons to feel overwhelmed and consider giving up.

Yet, none of these challenges are enough to deter us from our mission. In the wake of October 7th, fostering stronger connections and collaborations within the global Jewish community is more crucial now than ever. Our passion for this work continues to grow, as does the support we receive from those we aim to unite. We are expanding our network of advisors and partners, securing co-sponsors for our webinars, and establishing communities of practice. Our social media following increases each week, and our reach continues to expand. And we are achieving all of this during a period of unprecedented turbulence and antisemitism.

Like the little engine that could, we believe in our ability to succeed.

And with your support, we will.

Shabbat shalom, and may this be the week the hostages return home.
