TL;DR: The Jewish Public Library (JPL) of Montreal is a cultural cornerstone preserving over five centuries of Jewish history and heritage through its vast multilingual collections and archives. Beyond its role as a library, JPL serves as a dynamic hub for learning, dialogue, and community engagement, bridging tradition with contemporary life. As a proud member of Global Jewry, JPL is committed to collaboration, inclusion, and strengthening global Jewish connections to celebrate diversity, share ideas, and stand united against intolerance.

The Jewish Public Library (JPL) is a cornerstone of Jewish life in Montreal and a beacon of cultural preservation, education, and community engagement. With over 1300 linear metres of archival material and Special Collections, the JPL safeguards the social history of Jewish Montreal, preserving rare and unique documents, antiquarian volumes, and artefacts dating back to 1481. Its 150,000-volume collection spans English, French, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Russian, reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of Jewish communities across generations.

More than a library, the JPL is a vibrant cultural institution offering a wide range of programs and events for all ages, exploring every facet of Jewish life—from literature and history to contemporary issues, wellness, and identity. Rooted in tradition yet forward-looking, the JPL’s new vision is to connect the past to today’s challenges, foster personal growth, and promote inclusion. Through storytelling, education, and dialogue, we aim to build bridges within our community and beyond, engaging Jewish and non-Jewish audiences alike.

We are proud to be part of Global Jewry, a movement that aligns deeply with our values. At the JPL, we believe in the power of a strong, interconnected global Jewish community—one that shares ideas, resources, and creativity to co-develop and present programs that enrich and advance Jewish thought, culture, and heritage. Together, we can amplify our voices, celebrate our diversity, and stand united against antisemitism and intolerance.

As we look ahead, the JPL is committed to being an active and collaborative member of this global network. We welcome opportunities to partner, learn, and grow with others who share our passion for Jewish life and legacy. Let us work together to inspire, educate, and empower—because we are more powerful when we are connected.

Shavua tov and may this be the week the bodies of all of the hostages are returned,

Alain Dancyger

Executive Director, The Jewish Public Library (JPL)
