Each year, the Jewish community of Argentina convenes to remember the most devastating attack on Judaism in Argentina’s history. The AMIA bombing of 1994 killed and injured hundreds of people, and to this day, Jewish Argentinians come together to fight for justice.
Similar to the summer of 1994, Argentinian Jews find themselves in a difficult period, during what should be a conventionally joyous time, as the World Cup was hosted in the United States for the first time since 1994.
Despite the trepidatious times, Argentinian Jews have found meaning in a common soccer chant, by repurposing it to fight for justice. As the Jewish community in Argentina chants “today we cannot lose our memory”, they turn a stadium anthem into a collective vow, transforming grief into resilience and ensuring that remembrance endures louder than silence.
